Adjust your Midtones!

Try adjusting your midtones!

A slight tweak in this area can make a huge difference in creating contrast and clarity, helping your colours shine without overwhelming the composition. Experiment with shifting the midtones up or down to see the immediate impact—it’s an easy fix that can take your work from flat to full of depth.

In most editing or design software (like Photoshop or even a photo editor on your phone), there’s a tool that allows you to adjust the brightness levels of your image. This is typically divided into three parts:

  1. Shadows (the darkest parts),
  2. Highlights (the brightest parts),
  3. Midtones (the middle brightness, which affects the mid-range areas of your work, where most of the colours and details usually lie).

When colours appear “muddy,” it often means there’s a lack of contrast or clarity, making them look dull or unclear. By tweaking the midtones (raising them slightly to brighten or lowering them to darken), you can:

  • Increase contrast between different elements, making your colours stand out more clearly.
  • Add clarity, giving the image or design a sharper, more vibrant look without affecting the extreme dark or bright areas.

Steps to Adjust Midtones in Photoshop (or similar tools):

  1. Open Your Image:
    • Import the image or design you’re working on.
  1. Go to the Levels or Curves Adjustment Tool:
    • In Photoshop, you can find this under Image -> Adjustments -> Levels or Curves.
    • In Levels, you will see a histogram with sliders for Shadows (left), Midtones (middle), and Highlights (right).
  1. Adjust the Midtones:
    • The middle slider represents the midtones. Moving it slightly to the left will brighten the mid-range tones, making the image look lighter. Moving it to the right will darken the midtones, increasing contrast.
    • As you make these adjustments, you’ll notice changes in how the colours appear—brighter, more defined, or more vivid.
  1. Preview the Difference:
    • Before and after adjustments, compare the image to see how much more vibrant and clear the colours are, especially if they previously seemed “muddy.”
