Could you please provide the original colored versions of the 2 black and white reference pictures? I have a hard time envisioning a sunset I’ve never seen, or referring to one only in 2 colors. Thanks in advance!
Thank you for the first part. As I’m on the verge of starting a new painting, I took one of my own reference photos that I intend to incorporate, turned it to high contrast black and white, and sketched it as per your lesson using the very same brush. Kept the light parts just the paper, and diluted black paint for mid values. Took me less than 7 minutes and I think I will repeat this process on my (much larger) canvas. Waiting for the second lesson now. Warm regards from the Netherlands.
A really wonderful workshop with so much important information. I’m immediately start with my brushes to see what marks I get before putting down the shapes. Thank you Michelle.
I hope you are well. My name is Susan, I am 22 years old and I come from Afghanistan, where I have a deep passion for art. I discovered my talent for painting at the age of 9 when I drew a toy elephant my father bought me. My family and teachers encouraged me, and I participated in several school competitions, always achieving good results. However, I have not had the opportunity to pursue art professionally yet. While I can replicate any photo realistically, I still feel inexperienced regarding techniques and tools. The high cost of painting supplies has prevented me from using oil paints, and learning how to use them has been challenging.
After watching your video today, I felt hopeful. When I saw your announcement for the three-day workshop, I was thrilled, and receiving the email to participate made me even happier. Despite some internet issues, I watched the first day’s video in detail, and it was truly amazing. Thank you for your efforts, dear Michelle; I wish you continued success.
I also want to mention that if your workshop offered a certificate, it would greatly benefit individuals like me. Although it is a three-day workshop, it was clear from day one that it is rich in valuable content and details. It would have been wonderful to earn your certificate.
Susan thank you for your heartfelt message and for joining, I’m so pleased the workshop is inspiring you and please don’t feel you can’t create because you need so many materails because you really don’t. I don’t offer a certifcate – I’m sorry but I do hope you get lots of value from the workshop.
I appreciate this course very much! Looking forward to the next lesson, after completing the assignment. Thank you very much. Receive love and infinite joy, wealth and health.
Thanks for your question Karen. It’s actually a liquitex freestyle brush, you can get them in different widths. They are great for covering large areas and I like the way you can hold it, in this instance it is easier than if it had a handle. 😊
Hi Michelle, thank you so much for the workshop. I am English but live in central Portugal. I have drawn all my life off and on, I’ve also tried painting in different mediums. Never had any formal training so at the age of 70 I am just getting around to learning more. I had a few years of drawing pet portraits in coloured pencils and now would really love to do something other than copy photos, also drawing people’s pets is quite stressful as it’s vital to capture the pets character, otherwise it’s just another cat or dog. I have just finished my first homework, thank you. The biggest brush I have is a 1″ flat brush so not so big. I painted the same picture you showed on the tutorial in 5 minutes in size A3. I am going to buy some new brushes and paints soon so I am really looking forward to putting your advice into practice. Unfortunately the access to good art shops is very limited where I live so I will have to wait for a trip to Lisbon. Thanks again and I’m looking forward to day 2.
It’s so lovely to have you here Vanessa. Welcome. I’m glad you are finding the workshop helpful and learning and I hope you manage to find the supplies you need. Thanks again for sharing.
Hi Michelle. Thank you from Melbourne Australia. Just completed lesson 1 challenge homework and WOW. First time ever I have been able to block in shapes and values. Great lesson. Looking forward to lesson 2
Welcome Denise from Australia, lovely to have you here. I’m glad you found this helpful. It’s really good to just keep things simple in the early stages. Happy painting.
I am looking forward to this! I only just started painting. I want to paint looser. I painted a seascape, an owl, a Kingfisher, and a Blue Heron. Although I am happy with the Kingfisher and Blue Heron, I am finding I try to put too much detail in the paintings and they do not look soft. They instead look a bit stiff to me.
Thank you for you kind words. In Vibrant Visions we touch on composition. It’s alot around value, colour and planning all key things that contribute to a successful painting. I also intend to bring out a full workshop dedicated to composition within the next 12 months. Thank you.
The big brush idea makes total sense. I have such horrible brush marks on my paintings and spend so much time trying to fix what I just can’t. Time well spent just for the first lesson. Thank you
Hi Gabrielle, I’m sorry you’re having issues but not sure if it’s your side as I’ve checked and it’s working and noone else has had this. Please let me know if it continues.

Once we have had a go at the challenge, where do we share them?
We don’t have anyone specific to share them I’m afraid but it’s always good to do the challenges as this is where you get the most learning from.
Just love it! Very well explain! I also love your vibrant colours!

Здравей от България! Много интересен урок! Благодаря! Очаквам ден 3 с нетърпение.
Добре дошла на уъркшопа! Надявам се да ти хареса 🙂
Please delete this question, it seems to have duplicated my first one (which I changed as it didn’t seem to have posted).
What was the large paintbrush you were using? It looked like a decorating brush without a handle.
Are they a special order, or did you chop off the handle of the brush and finish it, yourself?
Somehow, it looked easier to use than if it had a handle. 🙂
