Thanks, Michelle. Itβs actually great just to see someone competent (not another newbie!) mix paints. Really useful. Iβll keep my palette more organised now. Which is a big deal. Interesting on βcoloured greysβ too. Excellent.
Hi Michelle !
So glad to find you , really appreciate your professional way of teaching.
Even I m late to our workshop i ll try to answer the questions.
This ve been saying , I m an intermediate , most of the time over work paintings , create my own paintings .
Thank you, so much. i have never painted before..my painter friend tells me I am not an artist but i love art. i want to be able to paint…lookin at it it just speaks to me….and whwnever i pick up the brush i am spending to much time in details of each subject. l just learnt about drawing the bigger objects and enjoyed it. Thanks again and looking fwd to doing hw of day 1. dont have big brushes just smaller ones but ill try with them in a smaller canvas.
Don’t ever let anyone tell you you’re not an artist. If you create or like to create you’re an artist. Just enjoy the process whatever materials you have.
Would you happen to have any guidance on selecting the three colors? One light, one medium, one dark, or other? All warm/cold or a mix of cold and warm? Any “rules” we should keep in mind?
Great question. It really depends on what you’re trying to acheive. There are lots of colour schemes out there, however if you are only working with three a good start is having three primaries.
Hi Michelle, I am really enjoying the 2 workshops so far and am learning a lot thank you. Just wondering if we are going to complete the landscapes we started in the first workshop?
I’m pleased you are enjoying them Linda. We don’t complete the painting, here I’m really just trying to demonstrate that when we look in shapes it makes the process easier. I hope you enjoy the rest of the workshop.
Michelle….
I’ve enjoyed your practical and encouraging techniques while watching in New Mexico, USA. While I’ve been waiting for your next day workshop- I have jumped into watching all your YouTube presentations, reading your blogs and exploring all your artwork on your website. Well done on all accounts! I’m looking forward to Day 3. — MHB
Thank you Melissa you are very kind and I’m please you are enjoying the workshops and all the other content. I really do hope it helps you on your own art journey. Michelle
Loved the workshop and enlightening. Some of my work has been quite muddy……..so will try the mixes!
Thank you so much for including me in the workshop. xxx
Hi Michelle I lost the feed and your video mid way? Can I ask you to please resend the link to me?
I twice to get into the workshop feed and would really like to complete watching.
Could you email me please. Or if you check your emails for the link it should be there. I’ve not had any other reports of losing the feed. Sorry if you had issues.
This workshop has been invaluable. Iβve been painting for a while now but seem to have stagnated. I think I have been guilty of overthinking, when what I should have done is slow right down and think about the shapes at the start of a painting, instead of allowing myself to be overwhelmed by the details. The colour mixing has been an eye opener too! Thank you Michelle for this fab workshop π
Sorry Justin I thought I had replied. I’m so pleased you found this helpful and enjoyed the workshop and I can’t see what you create inside the course now you’ve joined.
I really appreciate learning about the colors. I would always take too many out to start with. Learning the combinations is wonderful, especially on the pocketbook. I noticed when I focused on just a few colors the vibrancy was better. I appreciate the way you explain things also.
Thank you for this information – I have been shying away from color mixing because its seems so daunting – using only 3 colors makes so much sense. It will definitely help my colors harmonize in a painting.
That’s great Carla. Yes learning colour and mixing colour can be pretty daunting that’s why I always like to break things down into more manageable learnings to avoid overwhelm and you can do a lot with just three colours.
I did it…Used black and white. It is hard not to want to do the details. But I understand the process. I actually found myself conscious of how I held my brush.
The end result of my picture actually came out cool just black and white. I used an 8×10 panel.
Thank you.
Been painting with oils, but want to switch to acrylic b/c I love your style and use of color. Do you have a list of recommended colors I should start with to build my arsenal? Thank you so much
Amazing Ron. Yes of course. These are the colours I would suggest:
Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) β Also know as Winsor Blue in other brands
Hansa Yellow Opaque (if using Golden Fluid) or Cadmium Yellow Light (in other brands)
Cadmium Red Medium
Alizarin Crimson
Burnt Umber Light
Paynes Grey
Phthalo Green (Blue Shade)
Titanimum White
Optional extras:
Burnt Sienna
Cadmium or Pyrrol Orange
Raw Sienna
Green Gold is beautiful

Thanks for your kind words Mark, I’m pleased you enjoyed this process.
Thank you very much. I now see how to approach my work with a better understanding about color.
It has been a big struggle for me.
I’m really pleased you’ve enjoyed the workshop and it’s helped you.

That’s lovely Gina, thank you. I’m really pleased you are enjoying the workshop. It’s very easy to over work your paintings so you’re not alone.

Is it a specific white you use, Michelle, or is any white, OK for the colour mixing? TIA.
Titanium white is the best white to use Karen π
Michelle….

Amazing. Less is more, it forces you to spend more time mixing them. I appreciate you’re kind words π

Patti that’s amazing and a great start. How you hold your brush can really help π

Every time I mix paints I don’t have a system. Thanks Michelle for such a good practice.
You’re welcome. Over time it becomes intuitive but it’s good to have a starting point in mind.
Loved the big brushes
Canβt wait to do this exercise
Amazing please do share.
Amazing to learn this. Maybe I just put the rest of my colours in the trash π
Thank you for this nice and informative lesson.
Lol don’t throw them but you really only need a small self. It’s about learning how to use them effectively.
this blew me away! can’t believe how three colours and white created all of these colours.
thank you Michelle
Isn’t it amazing Tim. Sometimes less is more as it pushes you to mix rather than reach for other colours.
Glad you enjoyed.
