Not Feeling Creative Today? Try This Instead

Have you ever woken up just not feeling it? That was me this morning. Sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to create finished pieces that we forget the magic happens in the simple moments of play.

Today I’m sharing something really close to my heart – how colour mixing can be your creative lifeline on those days when motivation feels miles away. Just like forcing myself to do 40 minutes at the gym instead of my usual hour, sometimes we need to make art feel smaller, not bigger.

I’ve grabbed just three random colours – Cadmium Red Medium, Burnt Umber, and Phthalo Blue (plus white) – and I’m going to show you the incredible range of colours you can discover with so little. The impressionists knew this secret – working with limited palettes forces you to really see what’s possible.

This isn’t about creating a masterpiece. It’s about falling in love with the process again. It’s about discovering colours you never knew existed and building that creative routine back up, one brush stroke at a time.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to shift your mood through simple colour mixing
  • Why limiting your palette actually gives you more freedom
  • The therapeutic power of just playing with paint
  • How small creative actions can lead to big breakthroughs

Grab your sketchbook and a few colours – any colours you have will do. Let’s rediscover why we fell in love with painting in the first place.

What do you do when you’re not feeling creative? Drop your ideas in the comments – I’d love to hear how you snap out of those low mood days.

  1. Much enjoyed watching. I realise I don’t yet know enough about colour mixing so this is something I’ll be doing – thank you 😊

  2. Thank you so much Michelle this is just what I need today. I’ve been stuck but feel this activity will be so pressure free but beautiful that I’m going to go and do it. Nothing else required of me – just to turn up. 🩷

    1. Amazing and you are so right, sometimes we just have to show up and have little to no expectations of an outcome – just pure play! Enjoy.

  3. Michelle, this is also my favourite thing to do.. a colour buffet!!! Thanks for the reminder to play.. why do we put pressure on ourselves to produce?? Beats me! Because this truly is a joy in itself😍

    1. You’re so right Annette I don’t know why we put pressure on ourselves, it has to be more about the process than always the outcome ❤️

Thanks Michelle I needed this. Yesterday had the time and paints out but no mojo to produce. Shall just play with colour next time and give myself permission. Then walk in the garden – that also helps. Thats probably colour therapy too!

    1. I know what you mean sometimes you just don’t feel it but doing something different and simple can help. Being in the garden is definitely amazing too.
