The Secret Language
of Art

Stop staring at a blank canvas. Start painting with confidence, excitement and a clear vision — and create work you're genuinely proud of.

Most artists are surrounded by more inspiration in the everyday and photos they've already taken than they'll ever need. Landscapes they've walked past. Still life moments they've spotted. Scenes that stopped them in their tracks. The problem was never finding things to paint. It's knowing how to translate what you see into a painting that works. That's exactly what The Secret Language of Art fixes.

My mission is to help you develop the artist's eye — so you paint with intention, not guesswork, and see the world differently for the rest of your life.

You love painting. But something feels like it's missing.

You've been painting for a while. You've done the courses, watched the videos, worked through the tutorials. And you can paint — but there's a gap between the work you make and the work you dream of making. Whatever subject you paint, whatever medium you work in, this feeling is the same.

Maybe you find yourself…

  • You sit down to paint. You know roughly what you want. And then you just… sit there. And eventually walk away.
  • You have a hundred ideas in your head — and somehow none of them make it onto the canvas.
  • You've taken loads of photos you'd love to paint — but you have no idea how to translate them into something that actually works.
  • You stand in front of your finished painting and you know something isn't right — but you just can't put your finger on what.
  • There's a little voice before you even pick up a brush that says: this isn't going to work. So sometimes you don't pick it up at all.
  • You copy from references well enough — but the moment you try to create from your own vision, it falls apart.

What if instead you could…

  • Pick up your brush knowing exactly what you're going to paint — and feel genuinely excited to start
  • Look at the photos already on your phone and know how to turn them into paintings that sing
  • Never stare at a blank canvas not knowing where to begin again
  • Design compositions deliberately, not just by instinct
  • Create depth, atmosphere and distance with confidence
  • Use light and value to create mood and drama
  • Paint your own original work with full intention — and finish with something you're genuinely proud of
  • And as a wonderful by-product — walk into any gallery and understand exactly what you're looking at

Great painting isn't just about what you do with a brush. It's about what you see before you ever pick one up.

Composition, depth, atmosphere, the way a painting guides your eye without you knowing — these aren't things great artists just feel instinctively. They're a language. And like any language, once you learn it, you can't unlearn it.

— ✦ —

What if you could walk into any gallery, stand in front of any painting — and know exactly why it works?

And then bring that understanding into every painting you make.

— ✦ —

Here's something I hear all the time: "I've taken hundreds of photos — landscapes, still life, things that caught my eye — but I never know how to use them." You are not short of inspiration. You are short of the tools to translate what you see into something that works on canvas. That changes in Week 2 of The Secret Language of Art.

The Secret Language of Art

This is a 6-week programme unlike most art courses you've taken. Most courses teach you how to paint. This one teaches you how to see — and then how to build and do. Because it's in the doing that we truly learn. Over 6 weeks, you'll develop the visual language that underlies every great painting ever made, gather your own creative material, and put it all into practice in a final original painting that is entirely yours. Whatever subject you paint — landscapes, portraits, still life, abstraction — these are the foundational skills that will transform it.

By the end of this programme, you will:

✓

Know what to paint — and feel genuinely excited to sit down and start

✓

Turn the photos and scenes around you into paintings that actually work on canvas

✓

Never stare at a blank canvas wondering where to begin again

✓

Create work you're genuinely proud of — and want to share

✓

Design compositions deliberately, not just by instinct

✓

Create depth, atmosphere and distance with confidence

✓

Use light and value to create mood and drama in your work

✓

Plan every painting with thumbnails and a value study — so you know it's going to work before you start

✓

Paint with full intention, knowing exactly why you're making every decision

✓

And as a beautiful bonus — walk into any gallery and understand exactly what you're looking at

Standing with Van Gogh's Almond Blossom — and knowing exactly why it works.

This programme is for you if…

✓

You've been painting for a while but feel like something fundamental is missing

✓

You want to feel confident in your creative decisions — not just lucky when it works

✓

You copy reference photos well but want to create from your own vision

✓

You love art and want to deepen your relationship with it

✓

You want to understand art — not just make it hopefully

✓

You're ready to move from painting hopefully to painting intentionally

✓

This suits any medium and any style — acrylic, oil, mixed media, whatever you work in

✓

You want to become the artist who creates their own original work — and knows exactly how to do it

This is not an academic course. There are no essays, no right answers and no intimidating art history lectures. Just clear, warm, practical teaching that will change the way you see — for the rest of your life.

Your 6-Week Journey

Every week combines teaching, real painting examples and a practical assignment — because it's in the doing that we truly learn. You'll see differently, build your creative toolkit, and turn your artistic vision into something genuinely exciting. These skills apply to any subject you paint — landscapes, portraits, still life, or abstraction.

Week 1

The Rewire: The Seeing Gap

Most artists look. This week, you learn to actually see.

  • You'll discover why your brain lies to you about what you're looking at — and how to override it
  • You'll learn to see the world as shapes, edges and elements — the building blocks that underpin every great painting
  • Line, form, texture and space will stop being theory and start appearing everywhere around you

This is the shift that changes everything that comes after.

By the end of this week you will…

Look at any scene and see it as an artist — breaking it into shapes, edges and elements rather than what your brain tells you it should look like. You'll never unsee this.

Week 1 painting — The Seeing Gap

Week 2

The Inspiration Gap

You already have more to paint than you think. Let's find it.

  • You'll discover that inspiration isn't a lightning bolt you wait for — it's an accumulation of noticing, and you're already surrounded by it
  • You'll learn how to shoot reference photos that actually work, set up a still life with intention, and build a personal creative bank that feeds your painting for life
  • Everything you gather this week and beyond becomes the raw material for your final painting in Week 6

You'll leave this week feeling rich with material — not waiting for inspiration to arrive.

By the end of this week you will…

Have started your own inspiration bank — a growing library of references, still life setups and subject ideas that are genuinely yours. You'll know exactly where to look when you want to paint.

Week 2 — The Inspiration Gap

Week 3

The Magic of Composition

Why some paintings stop you in your tracks — and others don't.

  • You'll understand why great composition isn't luck — it's a set of clear, learnable decisions you can apply to every painting you ever make
  • You'll learn to design where the viewer's eye goes, what it rests on, and what creates that magnetic pull
  • You'll look at any great painting and see the invisible architecture underneath it — and start building that architecture into your own work

You'll use this framework for every painting you ever make.

By the end of this week you will…

Design a composition deliberately — choosing a structure, placing your focal point with intention, and guiding the viewer's eye exactly where you want it to go. No more hoping it works out.

Week 3 painting — The Magic of Composition

Week 4

Space, Depth & the Art of Edges

Make a flat canvas feel like a world you could step into.

  • You'll discover how atmospheric perspective, colour temperature and overlapping shapes work together to create convincing, believable space on canvas
  • Lost and found edges will become one of your most powerful tools — creating mystery, depth and a painting that breathes
  • You'll start seeing these tools in your own Week 2 reference photos — and know exactly how to use them

Your paintings will start to breathe in a way they never have before.

By the end of this week you will…

Push real depth and atmosphere into any painting — creating the feeling of distance, air and space even in a simple study. You'll be able to identify exactly how the masters used these tools in their work.

Week 4 painting — Space, Depth and Edges

Week 5

Creating Visual Drama

The secret weapons hiding in every great painting.

  • You'll understand how value — light and dark — is the single most powerful tool in a painter's kit, and how to plan it with intention before you ever pick up a brush
  • You'll see why Rembrandt, Vermeer and Sargent's paintings stop you in your tracks — and start applying those same decisions to your own work
  • Rhythm, energy, brushwork and movement: the principles that separate a painting that depicts something from one that genuinely moves you

This is the week that produces the biggest before-and-after leaps.

By the end of this week you will…

Plan the value structure of any painting before you start — knowing where the light, shadow and drama will live. You'll never again wonder why a painting feels flat. You'll know exactly why, and exactly what to do.

Week 5 painting — Creating Visual Drama

Week 6

Your Artistic Voice: From Plan to Paint

Everything you've learned. One original painting. Made with full intention.

  • You'll have a clear vision before paint touches canvas — a composition sketch, a value study and a colour plan — so when you step up to the easel, the fun can really begin
  • You'll paint with full awareness, making every mark deliberately, trusting the process and knowing how to problem-solve when something isn't working
  • You'll finish with a piece you're genuinely proud of — and a creative process that belongs entirely to you, and that you can repeat for every painting you ever make

No more blank canvas paralysis. No more not knowing where to start.

By the end of this week you will…

Have completed an original painting from your own vision — planned and executed with full intention. You'll leave with a piece you're proud of, and a creative process that belongs entirely to you.

Michelle Gibbs

Hi, I'm Michelle.

I've been an artist and art educator for over 20 years. I've taught hundreds of students — in person in my cabin studio, in my online programmes, and through my community — and the question I hear most often is the one I couldn't shake myself early in my career:

"Why does this painting work — and mine doesn't?"

The answer, I discovered, isn't talent. It's language. Once I understood composition, how the eye moves, how depth is created, how value builds drama — everything changed. Not just how I painted, but how I saw. And I've never looked at the world — or art — the same way since.

The Secret Language of Art gives you exactly that shift. Not in years — in 6 weeks. Taught clearly, warmly, and in a way that works whether you've been painting for 6 months or 20 years. And no matter what subject you paint, these skills will change the way you approach every canvas.

I've really enjoyed the new programme; it has really upped my game in the studio and out on location — well, every aspect of my art! I loved the way the material and topics were organised and presented. The bite-sized videos were brilliant: really engaging and held my interest throughout.

As an older artist with some years of experience and courses under my belt, I consider this course to be up there with the very best. I have learnt more in this one course about painting than any other, including a year's full-time Foundation Course in Art and Design I did in my 50s. I am waiting for you to write a book — or three! I wish I could hug you for what you have brought to me and my artistic practice.

You have not only reignited my longstanding love of art but have had a life-changing effect on my husband too. Since I signed up for The Secret Language of Art, I have waxed lyrical about painting and drawing, bought many books that I then shared with him, and we have visited several art galleries.

We spent several happy hours there and Edward was even able to point out a Peploe painting to me. It's all so amazing and makes me very happy indeed. Thank you, Michelle.

The Secret Language of Art is a truly brilliant programme. Michelle has created a course which breaks down everything I needed to know to improve my paintings. It has completely changed how I approach a painting and I now understand so much more about composition, values, how to plan a painting and also how to take an ordinary image to a finished piece.

Such fantastic value for money.

I was already on a learning plan covering many of the aspects but floundering alone, trying to guess. I'd compared all the BA Fine Art course contents in the UK and their recommended texts, but they weren't aimed the same way — not specific to becoming a better painter in terms of technique and storytelling.

I saw the old masters all did more than just a strawberry or a bird, but I didn't know how I could tap into their expert approach. This course promised a little towards that. It delivered it, and much more. Honestly, thank you very, very much xx

You might be wondering…

Yes — and this is one of the things the programme is most directly designed for. Week 1 rewires the overwhelm by giving you a completely new way of seeing. Week 5 solves the inspiration problem — including how to use the photos already on your phone. And Week 6 gives you a planning process so clear that "where do I even begin?" stops being a question. Most students find that by Week 3, getting started is the easy part.
No. If you can hold a brush and have a love of art, this programme is accessible to you. The visual language you'll learn applies to every level and every medium.
Absolutely. This programme stands completely alone. You don't need any prior experience with my other programmes. If you go on to do Vibrant Visions afterwards, you'll find it goes even deeper — but it's not a requirement.
The principles in this programme apply to all media — acrylic, oil, watercolour, mixed media. Everything you learn transfers.
Around 1–2 hours per week — but there's no pressure to keep up. The programme is yours to keep with lifetime access, so you can work through it entirely at your own pace and revisit any lesson whenever you like.
Knowing about composition and truly seeing it in practice are very different things. This programme builds understanding that goes far beyond rules — it's about deeply internalising a new way of looking.
We officially start the week commencing 5th October. Each week, we meet for a live call, and all calls are recorded so you can watch back at any time if you can't join live.
Not at all. All lessons are recorded and available to watch in the portal whenever suits you. You can also ask questions inside the portal and in the community group, so you'll never miss out on support even if you can't join live.

You've been painting. Now it's time to really see.

The visual language of art has been there all along — in every great painting you've ever loved, every image that stopped you in your tracks, every moment a piece of art made you feel something you couldn't explain. After this programme, you'll know why. And you'll paint differently forever.
