Copy of Collage and Mark Making: Part 2

Time to take it a step further…

This time, start by laying down your collage first. Think of it like building the bones of your piece. You could still use things like tissue paper and card, but let’s push it a bit more…

Try including:

  • Old photos (maybe photocopied if you don’t want to ruin the original)
  • Bits of your past artwork – chop them up!
  • Scraps from sketchbook pages
  • Interesting packaging or labels

Arrange your collage pieces across your page and glue them down. Don’t overthink – just play with placement until it feels fun.

Now, let’s bring in the paint! Work over the top with loose layers – this could be bold brushstrokes, gentle washes, or textured patches. Try to let some of the collage peek through.

You could also:

  • Use stencils to add patterns
  • Make your own prints (a potato stamp works wonders!)
  • Scratch into the paint with the end of your brush
  • Add a bit of scribble back in for that expressive touch

Let it be messy. Let it be playful. This is all about exploring layers and texture – not perfection.

Have a go and see what shows up!
