Materials & Supplies List

Here are my list of recommended materials and supplies. Please don’t feel you have to go out and buy everything, start with what you have and you can always add along the way if you prefer. I also have some limited ‘Paint Kits’ if you are in the UK. If you are outside of the UK I’d suggest buying your materials online as the delivery and custom charges would be to high.

Paint Kits

For most lessons I will be using Golden fluid acrylics as I love the high pigment strength they have, here are my recommended colours, however you are free to use any other brand or if you prefer to work with oil that’s fine to you will just have to wait between layers.

Typically I would shop around for the best price but I do find Cass Art quite reasonable: Cass Art

  • Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) – Also know as Winsor Blue in other brands
  • Hansa Yellow Opaque (if using Golden Fluid) or Cadmium Yellow Light (in other brands)
  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Burnt Umber Light
  • Paynes Grey
  • Quinacridone Magenta
  • Phthalo Green (Blue Shade)
  • Titanimum White (Larger Pot)
  • Ultramarine Blue

Other Supplies

  • 1 – 2 pots for water (I use old sauce or jam jars)
  • Apron or old clothes (acrylic won’t come out!)
  • Rags or blue roll (I use old towels or clothes)
  • Acrylic Gesso Primer – Art Discount or Cass Art or Amazon or Ken Bromley (most acrylic gesso primers will be fine so if you are in another country just search for the options available)
  • Acrylic Matt Medium – Art Discount or Cass Art or Amazon or Ken Bromley (most acrylic matt mediums will be fine so if you are in another country just search for the options available)
  • MDF Boards which can be cut at your local DIY shop are the most inexpensive and a great surface to use. See below for template cut outs. Alternatively you can use canvas, canvas board or paper
  • Paint Pallets x 2 Amazon (if you don’t want to invest straight away then tear off pallets will also work ok
  • Carban Transfer Paper Amazon or this one will come with the little tools though a pen will do the same thing: Amazon
  • Royal Langnickle Brush Set – Amazon

In addition to the below I use 1/2 inch and 1/4 inche Softgrip shader. Please don’t worry to much about brushes just get a selection of flats like shown below.

Optional extras:

  • Ipad Stand: Amazon
  • Table or standing Easel: Shop around but make sure you get one with a sturdy base. See below

If you want to get technical:

I use 2x soft box lights as they give me an even spread of light and more true colours (however they are very large) Amazon

Easel either stand at or table is fine.
